Issue #3 December 2008
Greetings!

This month, Community Shares will bid "farewell" to our executive director, Jacquie Talbott.  Jacquie will take a well-deserved break during the coming year to focus on family, healthy living and community involvement.  Her three-year tenure with Community Shares has seen us through a transition period following the retirement of a long-term executive director and has brought Shares many successes.

During Jacquie's first year at Shares, despite a difficult fundraising climate, our workplace giving campaign reached $1 million in pledges for the first time ever.  Last year we reached that milestone again and surpassed it.  And though the final results are not yet in, this year's campaign looks surprisingly healthy so far!

In addition, Jacquie spearheaded a new format for our annual meeting, boosting attendance and transforming it into a true fundraising event.  Our campaign kickoff, held at Cleveland City Hall in 2007 and 2008, enhanced community awareness and media coverage for Shares.  Internally, Jacquie increased the efficiency of administrative systems and improved communication with our members and other stakeholders.

We wish Jacquie the very best and sincerely thank her for her leadership in the work of supporting social justice organizations in Cleveland!
Each Gift Matters, Especially Now
By Deanna Rankin
Director of Workplace Campaigns, Community Shares

Remember to contribute to your workplace campaign.  Each gift matters, especially now.

Sometimes people ask "Why Community Shares? I already give to my favorite charity."  Think about this: if your doctor prescribes blood pressure medicine, that medicine is necessary.  But it is also necessary to address your body's system, e.g. change your eating habits, exercise, maybe even have surgery.  Together, the medicine and the systemic change will lead to a more healthy you.

That's why we need Community Shares.  It addresses the system of our community.  Social services are like the blood pressure medicine.  We can't just keep increasing the amount of medicine we prescribe; we have to make changes, get at the root causes of the issues facing our community.  That's what our member organizations do.  Please help us support this important work.  Your participation is essential.

SLD Education Opportunities
Learning Disabilities Association of Northeast Ohio
Learning Disabilities Association of Northeast Ohio (LDANEO) offers two workshops in early 2009 for those affected by Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD).

You know what your child likes to eat and what she likes to wear. You know what kind of grades she gets. But do you know why she may not have many friends?  If you have a child with an SLD in grades 3-5 who needs guidance with his or her Social Skills, we can help! Click here for details.

Parents and Teachers Together have a unique opportunity to
learn about SLDs.  Gain an increased understanding of SLDs, special education laws, evaluations and IEPs.  Ten professional development contact hours will be offered through State Support Team Region 3.  Click here for details.
Heading for the Emergency Room
NEOCH and UHCAN Ohio
In the fall of 2008, the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH), with support from Universal Health Care Action Network of Ohio (UHCAN Ohio), surveyed 320 homeless people about their experiences with the health care system.  The resulting report, Heading for the Emergency Room: The Harsh Reality of Northeast Ohio's Inability to Care for Its Poor, presents for the first time detailed information and statistics on the health condition of Cleveland's homeless population.

Those who work in the field of homelessness see the problem every day.  The report appeals to those outside the field to begin to take the issue seriously.  Click here to read the report.
Cleveland Supports Domestic Partner Registry
LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland and ACLU of Ohio Foundation
Thanks in part to the energetic, well-organized advocacy efforts of the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, the ACLU of Ohio Foundation and other supportive groups, Cleveland City Council voted on December 8 to make Cleveland the third city in Ohio to create a domestic partner registry, joining Toledo and Cleveland Heights.

While the registry does not create any new legal rights, it can be an invaluable tool for unmarried same and opposite sex couples to access services such as employment benefits, child care, hospital visitation and more. The registry is also a revenue booster, as well as sending a message to the community that all families are valued and respected.

Health Care Hero
The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland
The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland won this year's  Crain's Health Care Heroes award in the Health Care Advocate category.  Finalists were selected from 150 nominations in categories such as allied health, advancements in health care by an individual or a company, volunteer, nurse, physician and health care advocate.

The Free Clinic also implemented a Health Literacy Program, addressing both the delivery of information by health educators/practitioners and efforts to build the skills of patients to seek, understand and use health information.
What Makes a House a Home?
Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity
As part of the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) conference in Cleveland, AATA members took part in a service project benefiting Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity. They created a large-scale mural themed "What Makes a House a Home?" for the Restore at Habitat's new Cleveland headquarters. More than 60 18-inch square canvases were sent from art therapists around the country. On November 19, art therapy volunteers worked all day to assemble the works on six giant boards that now hang along the "check-out" wall at the ReStore. Click here for pictures.

"We were both blessed and overwhelmed by the beauty of the project," said Jeffrey Bowen, Executive Director of Cleveland Habitat. In addition to the mural project, members of the Buckeye [Ohio] Art Therapy Association donated 100 art supply kits for the children of Habitat Partner Families.
Act Boldly, Live Gently
Preterm
Preterm is greening its building, grounds and daily operations to become an environmentally friendly medical facility and achieve LEED-EB certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Building). Based on the principle that healthcare facilities should be healthy for the planet as well as people, this three-year effort includes dozens of projects, among them inspiring staff and visitors to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The "Act Boldly, Live Gently" capital campaign was enthusiastically launched this fall. Despite the downturn in the economy, Preterm is pressing on, making renovations as funds arrive. For more information on the greening of Preterm and the capital campaign, contact Linda Jane, Director of Development & Communications, ljane@preterm.org
New Leadership
Domestic Violence Center
Domestic Violence Center (DVC) announced the appointment of a new executive director in November.  Linda Dooley Johanek has been with DVC for 13 years, serving as director of development for the past 6 years. She was chosen for the position after an extensive nationwide search.  With 20 years of leadership and management experience in the nonprofit sector, Linda brings a wealth of enthusism, skill and dedication to the role.

Hard Hatted Women
Hard Hatted Women (HHW) recently named Terri Burgess Sandu, interim director since April 2008, to the position of excutive director.  Terri joined HHW as development director in 2001 and has had a 20-year community service career in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.  Despite a recent restructuring of operations in order to decrease operating expenses, Terri stated, "When an economic stimulus package is passed and new efforts take shape in Ohio, HHW will be here to make sure that women are ready to take advantage of those opportunities."
